Today is Lung Leavin’ Day! For those that may not know, Lung Leavin’ Day was founded 16 years ago by Heather Von St. James. Heather was diagnosed with mesothelioma at 36 and was told she only had 15 months to live. 16 years ago, Heather had her lung removed. Her sister decided to nickname the day Lung Leavin’ Day in order to lighten the situation. The name stuck and has been celebrated every year since.
Lung Leavin’ Day is a time for everyone to overcome their fears. Heather says she celebrates this day by getting together with her family & friends, writing their fears on plates, and then smashing them in a fire.
Lung Leavin’ Day continues to grow each year, and to date, they have raised over $37,000 for mesothelioma research.
While smashing a plate into a fire isn’t exactly achievable for all of us, try celebrating this Lung Leavin’ Day by writing your fears down on a piece of paper, crumpling it up, and tossing it in the trash. Or, try celebrating it however you’d like!
